The Peoples Champ

One more reason to respect the world champ Jeff Hubbard ---> "We need to give the new bodyboarders some history, as bodyboarding is such a young sport. It’s important to solidify our roots. With print magazines being so slow with new information it seems prudent to focus on the past as well." @jdhubb @hubboards now that's #Aloha #WaveSlideCulture and #SupportOurSport wrapped up into one quote. #mahalo Jeff. We got your back. @bbrmag

Call Two Arms.

This is a re-blog from our friends at www.CoastalPlayground.com
Please read and respect the ocean.
----
"For all you wave riding hypocrites".

Now back up for one second and soak that in. So before you go looking for me in the water to give me your two cents, or two fists for that matter, understand I'm trying to bring light to the problem of dirty beaches and oceans to whoever may be listening. Now as wave slider's we all want to live a healthy lifestyle, which includes protecting our beaches. But do we really want clean beaches? A part of me says, "fu¢k yeah", but a deeper part of me inside says, "fu¢k no"! Why? Every time I'm at the beach or in the water I see garbage piled up and people walk by it like it's not even there.

I like to tell people about an idea I have for picking up trash while on the way in and out of the water. When I explain it, people get really stoked on the idea and amped about supporting the beach cleanup cause. But, I rarely see anyone pick up a piece of trash these days; it’s like the idea crashes into oblivion like a good south swell at Wedge. Do people have short memories? Or, just DGAF? It bums me out that the people who spend the most time enjoying the water give a $hit the least when it comes to conserving this natural resource.

So this is a call 2 arms, yes YOUR arms to reach out and pick up that piece of trash you see in front of you and throw it away. I propose a "one in one out" rule for anyone who dare to take on this never-ending challenge. Before you go in the water, and before you step out of the water, pick up just one piece of trash; I dare you. I mean after an epic session what better way for you and the boys to keep the positivity going than helping keep our beaches clean.

I'm done with my rant for today. What do you guy's think? I would appreciate any feedback on this piece, whether you agree, or disagree. Thank you to Coastal Playground for giving me the platform to speak.

Spam Musubi

Given the popularity of spam in Hawaii, and the rice-centric nature of local diets (and the ubiquitous nature of the musubi), chances are hundreds of islanders "invented" the spam musubi on their own for years. But the spam musubi is definitely an icon of the Hawaii diet, and the explosive mass-market popularity can perhaps be traced back to one person.

Sun-Ki Chai, moderator at the food-centric Hawaii eGullet forum, found some history in "Hawaii's 2nd Spam Cookbook" (Bess Press, 2001). The book is also cited in a June 2002 article on musubi in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

According to author Ann Kondo Corum, Mitsuko Kaneshiro first made spam musubi for her children, but then started selling them out of City Pharmacy on Pensacola Street in Mo`ili`ili. By the early 1980s, she was selling 500 a day. I think the term 'Choke Musubi' would be an understatement.

Fitted Hawaii Kahekili Tank

Fitted Hawaii drops this sick tank top for Summer. The details are on point with the story.

"The Kahekili tank. Black tank which features an all over graphic print of Kahekili (in white), the 13th King of Maui. At the time when Kahekili ruled Maui (along with Lanai & Molokai), his half brother ruled Kauaʻi, while Kamehameha controlled the Big Island. Fearing a takeover by the brothers, Kamehameha instead took his army to Maui, knowing that Kahekili had gone on to Oʻahu and left the island under the rule of his son. Conquering the island with a swift preemptive strike, Kamehameha then waited for Kahekili’s timely passing before he was able to conquer Oʻahu. Never defeated in battle, Kahekili was a true great chief of Hawai’i, and some historians suggest that though not the popular belief, Kahekili may indeed be the true father of Kamehameha." -Fitted Hawaii

IN4M x G-Shock

Not new to each other, Hawaii’s In4mation has once again hooked up with G-Shock on a new watch. While they kept it more colorful the last times, for Summer 2012 things are getting more subtle. They worked on the GLX-150X-7JR G-Lide watch, kept it in all white with a small red accent on the strap holder and their logo printed on the straps in black. The custom packaging comes with an all over print though.

The new In4mation x G-Shock watch will release June 2012.

Recycled Stoke

Recycled Stoke hand planes made from Recycled Skate Decks!! Who doesn't love bodysurfing? I think it is the truest form of wave riding. The rush of the water beneath you and the energy of the wave in full contact. However, many purists feel that you should only have a pair of swim fins when you bodysurf. I feel like you can use just about anything to bodysurf with and it just makes it epic. Go to any respectable beach break and count the lunch trays! This summer, step your game up on a Recycled Stoke Hand Plane. Go get pitted!—

Kahili

Inside the "OkShoots" logo, there is an icon found in what is known as the Kanaka Maoli flag. Or the "Native People's" flag. (great article here)
20120522-061615.jpg

Within this icon there is a Kahili (kah-HEE-lee) and two paddles. The Kahili is a symbol that is used as a standard of royalty. Similar to how Eurocentric royalty would have a coat of arms or banner. This feathered creation was used in ancient times by the Hawaiian royalty, to show social status, rank and family lineage.

*There are many sizes and styles of kahili, from very small kahili-pa`a-lima (hand kahili) carried like a scepter by female chiefs, to the towering formal kahili. There are also many intermediary sizes which each have their own place in traditional regalia.

When things of the past get buried, they have a tendency to be forgotten. OkShoots is using this symbol as a way to remember the ways of the past island life and lifestyle. Is using this symbol "kapu"? Well that's for the end user to decide. But in our camp, it is a nod to the ali'i in the past, present and future. And by highlighting the Kahili in our logo, we just want people to know that OkShoots did not forget the paths the Polynesian people have traveled in the past, and the paths the Polynesian people will forge into the future.

"Aloha is Everywhere!"
-OkShoots

First Landing

20120514-102705.jpg

First Landing portrays how the occupation of Kaho’olawe Island on January 4, 1976 by nine courageous individuals inspired by the Spirit of Aloha, began a chain of events that revitalized the Hawaiian culture. This powerfully poignant film shares their untold true story. Aloha Occupies Us All.

"We need your help to get a story that would otherwise be untold to receive the attention it deserves and spread the true Aloha Spirit, which occupies us all. In order to develop the following and support needed to bring this project to fruition, we hope that you may take a moment to simply share the message and join our Ohana and movement. Most people have a Facebook page and it is the easiest. Please press the share button to the right with a message to your friends asking them to join the movement… Mahalo from all of us, to all of you…" -First Landing Staff

Just Do It

Kolohe Andino will be droppin' da' hammah' in his surf game with these new Nike boardshorts. Nike pulls out all stops and get all tech as they usually do. No airbags or springs, but some features include super stretch materials (without feeling like biker shorts) and flat weld seams, (just like your wetsuit) which means less rash! And the best part - Hydra Void! A new hydro-phobic water shedding material. And just like new Jordans, they make you jump higher, especially with a price tag over $100. Just Do It?
